Close Time, 2017
For player welfare reasons, Scottish Rugby applies a period each year during which there is a mandatory break from playing rugby matches. This includes not just XVs but also Sevens and Tens and also applies to age grade games.
The period during which no matches are allowed is known as “Close Time”.
The Close Time Period does not apply to:
• Touch, Tag, Wheelchair or Beach Rugby;
• Training or gym sessions; or
• Matches or Events for which Scottish Rugby has provided written permission.
During 2017, Close Time will run from 22 May to 4 August 2017.
Scottish Rugby reserves the right to approve all matches and tournaments taking place within its jurisdiction. This includes any matches proposed to take place during Close Time. Without permission, no insurance coverage will apply.
Permission to Play in “Close Time”
On a case by case basis, Scottish Rugby will consider applications to hold matches during the Close Time period. To apply for permission for such a match, you can find a form online on the SRU website, under Close Time or click here.
Please note that Scottish Rugby is unlikely to grant approval for any match scheduled to take place after the third Sunday in June i.e. 18 June 2017.
A number of matches have already been approved for the 2017 Close Time period, including our own Women’s Charity Tournament on Sunday 11 June 2017.
Anyone who wishes to apply for permission to play during Close Time should consult me, Brian Mullins, in advance of submitting any application to Scottish Rugby.
